Canna 'Iridiflora Rubra'

A medium sized cultivar; green and purple variegated foliage, large, ovoid shaped, maroon margin, branching habit; triangular stems, coloured purple; spikes of flowers are erect, self-coloured orange-purple, staminodes are long and narrow, edges regular, petals purple with farina, fully self-cleaning; fertile both ways, not true to type, self-pollinating, capsules round; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured purple; tillering is average.

Introduced by Théodore Année, Passy, France, EU in 1864.

Canna 'Intrigue'

A tall Foliage Group cultivar; purple foliage, large, lanceolate shaped, upright habit; round stems, coloured purple; flowers are open, self-coloured orange-red, staminodes are long and narrow, edges regular, petals purple with farina, fully self-cleaning; fertile both ways, not known if true to type, self-pollinating, capsules round; rhizomes are long and thin, coloured white and pink; tillering is prolific.

Apparently one of the most outstanding new introductions of the late century, its tall distinctive upright habit make a strong architectural statement. The earliest reference is Kelly's Plant World, California, USA. catalogue of 1989. However, it transpires that this cultivar was acquired by the UK National Collections who were unable to trace its origins and so gave it a new name. The real name is still out there, and we will probably be able to realign it with its real name as more of the Eastern European Botanical gardens become online. There is a strong Canna tradition in Eastern Europe, and we have acquired some of our heritage specimens from those sources.

In addition to C. 'Intrique, new names were also given at that time to other old cultivars as C. 'Mystique' and C. 'Passionata'. So, there are three old foliage group members waiting to acquire their real names.

Bee plight taken seriously at last

Einstein said that if bees vanish from the planet, then mankind will follow them in three years time. At long last, and after much campaigning, the UK Government is doing something about the desperate decline of the UK bee population.

On 21 April, the UK government announced that £10m will be spent on research for pollinators - bees, butterflies and other insects - to see if the decline in UK populations can be halted.

The government is contributing £2m with the rest coming from the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the Scottish Government.

"Bees pollinate crops worth potentially hundreds of millions of pounds to British agriculture." said Tim Lovett, president of the British Beekeepers' Association.

"Take a meat pizza - without the bees, all you'd be left with is the bread base, as in many countries cows are fed on pollinated crops like alfafa."

And yet in recent years a series of diseases has affected bee populations in this country and elsewhere. In many cases we neither know the causes of these illnesses or the cures for them, but they are having a terrible effect on bee populations.

"We have moved bees across the world, changing their living conditions and spreading diseases," says Bob Maurer, a Reigate beekeeper, "and good bee management is now essential."

'Eleventh hour'

While beekeepers are glad that the government has recognized the scale of the problem, they say there has historically been a lack of funding for bee research. Vital staff have been lost, and their skills take time to replace.

Mr Lovett points out that the vast majority of hives are kept by amateur beekeepers, with just a few hives each; and if dying bee colonies become too widespread they will simply give up their hobby.

"This announcement has come at the 11th hour," says Mr Lovett. "We all just hope the research will come in time."

Spring weather forecast

For those in Europe wondering when they will be able to plant their Cannas outside, maybe the Met Office forecast for the remainder of spring, i.e. until the end of May, will help.

Rainfall

For the UK and much of northern Europe precipitation is likely to be average or below average.

In contrast, average or above-average rainfall is likely over southern Europe and the central Mediterranean.

Sunshine

For the UK and western Europe mean temperatures for the rest of spring are likely to be either near or below average.

In contrast, mean temperatures are likely to be near average or above average over much of eastern Europe.

An update to the spring forecast will be issued by 11 a.m. on 23 April 2009.

One of the Island Series, in total there are: C. 'Corsica', C. 'Gran Canaria', C. 'Kreta', and C. 'Madeira'. They were originally propagated as meristem cultures and distributed as small plugs, but apparently Canna does not lend itself easily to that form of culture and they have been removed from widespread commercial production.

Canna 'Golden Lucifer'

A small Crozy Group cultivar; green foliage, oval shaped, branching habit; triangular stems, coloured green; panicles of flowers are open, gold heavily spotted with red, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals yellow, fully self-cleaning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white; tillering is average.

Appeared first in US catalogues in the 1990's. It is obvious that this is yet another renaming marketing exercise of an existing cultivar, as is C. 'Lucifer'. As yet I haven't had an opportunity to evaluate which cultivars disappeared when this name was introduced, but when time is available then I will, unless somebody else does it before me!

Flowers emerge at night, but fade in the heat of the day, all other Cannas flower at day-break. Indigenous to the wetlands of south-eastern USA. It was a parent to many of the early-hybridised cannas known as Italian Group cannas. It grows well as a water canna.

Originally described by the early American explorer, William Bartram, when he found these plants blooming near the rivers of coastal Georgia. The seed floats down the rivers and becomes easily established on shorelines. Introduced to England in 1788.

More Canna 'Félix Ragot'

On the 8th April I blogged an article on Canna 'Félix Ragot'. This resulted in Bernard Yorke, from Australia, writing to explain that he also grows this plant, under the name Canna 'Felix Ragout', having acquired it two years ago from Podgora Gardens in New Zealand. Bernard is also of the impression that this cultivar is a Podgora introduction.

The earlier blog also included a photograph of my specimen, which also emulates from Podgora, but which lacks the rather attractive spotting and distinct colouring of the stamen and style as shown on Bernards' specimen.

The next time that Bernard contacts Sonya he will make enquiries and establish the correct details. So, watch this space.

Canna 'Félix Ragot'

We cannot trace the originators of this cultivar, but we believe that it has been renamed many times by others over the years for marketing reasons. There again, if we can't identify an originator, then maybe it is an existing cultivar that has been renamed for commercial reasons. These things do happen, you understand?
