When Mr Donnie Hallman of Deersprings Nursery, South Carolina, USA announced his new introductions for 2002, it aroused a large amount of interest. There were four new cultivars, amongst which was Canna 'Shaka Zulu''. "Flowers are bright orange/red. Foliage is very dark. Sunglasses are not provided with this plant, so don't stare directly at it.", stated Mr Hallman. " Well... maybe not that bright, but still very pretty. 5 ft. Tall.", he concluded. The breeding is C. 'Pacific Beauty' x C. 'Kenya'.
